The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Sol Plaatje Municipality to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the newly reopened Brian Hermanus swimming pool in Floors, Kimberley, following an oversight inspection of the facility.
The pool, which was closed for many years due to vandalism and neglect, was reopened on 1 January after sustained pressure from the DA. The DA successfully ensured that the restoration of the Ward 14 facility was included in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), allowing renovations to be properly planned, funded, and implemented.
The DA welcomes the return of a fully functional and well-maintained municipal pool. Beyond offering much-needed recreation, exercise, and relief from Kimberley’s extreme heat, the reopening restores an important part of the Floors community’s legacy.
As a valuable public asset, the pool must be protected by both the municipality and the community.
The DA urges residents to immediately report any vandalism or sabotage at the facility.
The municipality has also been called on to ensure that pool management is consistently supplied with the tools and equipment required for effective maintenance.
This includes additional piping to remove debris from hard-to-reach areas of the pool. Clear signage, including pool regulations and “no alcohol” notices, must be erected as a matter of urgency and enforced to prevent incidents. The DA has further requested the removal of Prosopis trees along the perimeter wall, as falling leaves are clogging the pump system.
The DA notes the presence of security personnel, perimeter lighting, and the appointment of lifeguards. Further oversight visits will be conducted during peak periods to assess crowd control and bather safety.
In addition, the DA will monitor the completion of the ongoing bathroom and parking upgrades to ensure the project is completed without delays and that public funds are used responsibly.
It is long overdue that more recreational and sporting facilities in Kimberley are restored and kept operational to provide safe, healthy entertainment for residents of all ages.
