The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape extends our condolences to the family of the police sergeant, and the Danielskuil Detective Unit, after a fatal on-duty accident on the R31 road between Danielskuil and Kuruman this morning.
According to a police statement, the accident happened while the sergeant and a constable were transporting 13 prisoners from Kuruman to Danielskuil. The constable and prisoners are said to be receiving medical treatment in hospital.
We call for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While all facts are still to be determined, the transport of a large number of prisoners by two detectives raises questions about prisoner transport arrangements and operational procedures that must be carefully examined to ensure the safety of both officers and detainees.
We trust the investigation will provide clarity and that any matters identified will be transparently communicated and urgently addressed, to reduce risk and address possible operational shortcomings in the future.
