– DA stands against crimes against children.
– We support the family of three-year old murder victim.
– Those who harm children must be removed from society.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) today protested outside the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court against child murder and in support of the family of murdered three-year-old Othniel Kuyanie, ahead of the accused’s bail hearing.
Othniel’s body was discovered inside a rucksack in Vergenoeg, Galeshewe, last month, sending shockwaves through the community.
The DA stands firmly with Othniel’s family in their pursuit of justice. Othniel was robbed of the chance to play, learn, grow and live a full life. No family should ever have to endure the loss of a child under such horrific circumstances.
We commend the efforts of law enforcement officials working to ensure that justice is served. The case was postponed to 11 August after the accused once again abandoned his bail application during today’s court proceedings. We will continue to monitor developments closely.
Othniel’s brutal murder must serve as a driving force for the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the broader criminal justice system to ensure that those who harm children are not only apprehended but successfully prosecuted through watertight investigations and strong cases that lead to convictions. Those who prey on children have no place in our communities.
Following Child Protection Week, we also call on communities to work together to safeguard children and embrace a whole-of-society approach to safety.
The DA will continue to advocate for safer communities, stronger law enforcement, and justice for victims of violent crime. We remain committed to protecting our children and building a society where every child can grow up safe, secure and free from fear.
