As South Africans are hit by rates hikes this week, Nama Khoi residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the DA-NCM-VF+ coalition municipality implements the lowest electricity tariff increase in South Africa.

The electricity tariff increase for the 2025/2026 financial year is 4,1%. The increase was approved by Nersa, after Nama Khoi was able to prove that it is on stable financial footing. Unlike so many other municipalities, the Nama Khoi coalition doesn’t treat electricity sales as a profit-making tool to keep the municipality afloat. Instead, we view electricity as a bare necessity, that keeps households and the local economy alive.

The Nama Khoi coalition attributes our ability to put residents first, to our largely inward-looking focus. We have set up mini-metering substations that allow us to easily pick up on, and address electricity losses. Through this system, we were able to replace over 400 bypassed meters in two months. We are investigating previous contractual irregularities that could save the municipality thousands of rands. The municipality has also ramped up our use of more affordable solar electricity.

To ensure that residents get the best deal possible, we have further restructured our electricity rates to benefit both high-and low-end electricity users.

In addition to our low electricity rate increase, the Nama Khoi coalition municipality has also imposed 0% tariff increases for water and property rates.

The Nama Khoi coalition prides itself in protecting residents and not punishing them.
