The Democratic Alliance is gathering support for a petition to Magareng Municipality to restore water to Windsorton Station in Warrenton, eighteen months after the theft of a control box dried up water supply to the area.
The prolonged water crisis has impacted on the quality of life of about 40 residents who are solely dependent on borehole water.
According to a response received by the Supply Chain Officer earlier this month, a request for quotations was sent back to Technical Services during February this year, with no response received to date.
Since water provision was abruptly halted on 15 October 2023, the DA has been pushing for a solution. We submitted a written letter to the Magareng Municipal Manager asking for an urgent intervention and raised this matter at every committee and council meeting since the incident. The DA even sourced a quotation for a control box and pump, to help simplify matters for the municipality. There is thus no justifiable reason for not restoring water to Windsorton Station.
The DA has also reported this matter to the MEC of COGHSTA, the South African Human Rights Commission, members of parliament and the Department of Water and Sanitation, yet we still see no results.
The DA will not give up now. Residents of Windsorton Station deserve access to running water and through our petition, we will continue to put pressure on Magareng municipality and make our demands for water known.
