The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Northern Cape MECs for Transport, Safety and Liaison, and Roads and Public Works, to urgently intervene on the R31 near Barkly West, dubbed the “road of death.”
Another fatal accident over the weekend, which claimed the life of a young soccer player, has once again exposed the devastating consequences of government inaction and the urgent need for visible traffic law enforcement on this dangerous route.
The DA extends our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wishes those injured in the crash a full and speedy recovery.
For years, the R31 has become a nightmare for residents, commuters, learners, sports teams and workers who travel this road daily. Communities in Dikgatlong municipality have repeatedly raised alarm over the endless stream of heavy manganese trucks using the route, many seen to be speeding, overtaking recklessly, and parking illegally in Barkly West, placing lives at risk every single day.
These warnings have been ignored for far too long.
The DA has written to the MECs to demand an urgent road safety intervention on the R31. This must include:
• Visible traffic law enforcement to clamp down on reckless truck driving;
• Immediate action against dangerous and illegal truck parking;
• Stricter monitoring and enforcement of road safety regulations; and
• Engagement with mining companies and freight operators to ensure accountability and safer transport practices.
The people of Dikgatlong cannot continue living in fear while mining profits are prioritised over human lives. Communities deserve safe roads.
