The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is celebrating an outright win in Siyancuma, Ward 4, substantially growing our support base, and reclaiming a former DA stronghold in today’s Douglas by-election.
The DA increased our percentage of the vote from 34,24% in the 2021 Local Government Elections to 56.11%.
Tonight’s win not only demonstrates citizens’ appreciation for the DA’s outstanding track record where we govern in the Government of National Unity (GNU), and at a provincial and local level, but also of our dedication towards service, care and accountability, where we are in opposition.
Lemfvia van Niekerk, who will now take up the position of ward councillor, has over the years diligently served the Ward 4 community as a proportional representative (PR) councillor. Fighting for streetlights, toilets, better roads, regulated dumps and access to clean water, and responding to the community’s needs, whether in times of fire distress or even hunger, Lemfvia has not backed down from getting involved, always finding a way to ease the plight of residents.
The DA appreciates that voters genuinely value the work done by the DA in trying to build a better future for our towns, province and country. We also appreciate their refusal to sell their votes to parties that abuse state machinery for by-elections and who want to bring instability within municipalities in the Northern Cape.
The acknowledgement by voters that we are a party that is uncompromisingly grounded in values and principles is indeed reassuring.
The DA will continue to tackle poor service delivery by the ANC in Ward 4 and to further seek out stakeholder cooperation, to better address ongoing challenges experienced by the greater Douglas community.
The DA thanks the voters of Ward 4 for their support.
We will build on the momentum achieved in this by-election and continue to build trust in the DA, as we work towards rescuing broken municipalities, like Siyancuma, one ward at a time.
