The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reiterated our call on the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen Koliswa Otola to do more to make Northern Cape communities safer.

Our ongoing concerns with regards to growing violent crime in the province, particularly murder, once again hit home last night when the brother of the DA’s own Northern Cape Member of Parliament, Ofentse Mokae, became the latest statistic following a stabbing incident that occurred in Galeshewe, Kimberley.

No one is immune from increasingly pervasive and violent crime, that has Northern Cape residents living in a perpetual state of fear for themselves and their loved ones.

Harold McGluwa, DA Provincial Leader, has expressed his condolences to Mokae, who serves as the National Council of Provinces Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings, and as a Member at Select Committee on Security and Justice.

The DA notes that SAPS has arrested a suspect in relation to the crime. While nothing can bring Mokae’s brother back, the DA will closely monitor the case to ensure that justice runs its course. We will also continue to hold SAPS accountable for ensuring safe communities, and protecting all citizens of the Northern Cape.
