The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the ongoing crackdown on corruption relating to the National Lotteries Commission (NLC). This comes after a raid on a Kimberley accounting firm, which follows on an earlier raid on the NLC, two years ago.

It is alleged that certain accounting firms and accountants were involved in aiding nonprofit organisations in preparing fraudulent financial statements, used as supporting documentation for grant funding applications.

The DA condemns the funneling of lottery grant funds, intended to develop much needed facilities like drug rehabilitation centres, old age homes, and youth empowerment facilities, into the pockets of those who were meant to be guarding and disbursing these funds.

The situation speaks to the endemic corruption in the Northern Cape, where positions are seen as an opportunity to loot the state, not boost the state with service delivery.

The DA will monitor the case closely to ensure that steps are taken to hold those guilty of the unlawful misappropriation of state funds, accountable.
